Symptoms: Difficulties with school since early childhood, low motivation, risky, stimulus-seeking behavior.
Jack was diagnosed with dyslexia at age 7 and ADHD at age 9. He described always struggling to focus at school, getting into trouble and receiving individual support throughout his time at school. Although he tested as intelligent, Jack’s grades were always disappointing.
Jack was 19 when we assessed him. After graduating high school Jack spent a semester in college, but was forced to come home after just one semester having withdrawn from two classes and getting poor grades in the remaining two.
Jack’s brain reflected his academic difficulties. Frontal lobe function was more than 3 standard deviations less active than normal, explaining why attention to academics required superhuman effort, and why he struggled to motivate himself.
Neurofeedback has been used to treat ADHD for decades and has significant research validating its success. After 60 sessions of neurofeedback, Jack’s function was significantly improved, and he was looking to return to college – this time more hopeful.
